At the heart of AERO is a high-performance electrostatic filter media designed to capture exhaled particles, bacteria and viruses, helping to reduce the risk of cross-contamination during pulmonary function testing. The filter media combines high filtration performance with hydrophobic properties that help limit contamination caused by moisture droplets generated during patient exhalation.
These characteristics allow AERO to maintain low airflow resistance and a reduced dead space volume of 73 mL, contributing to improved reliability and repeatability of spirometry measurements while helping to reduce rebreathing.
Performance That Makes a Difference
AERO has been developed to provide an optimal balance between protection, patient comfort and measurement quality.
Its filtration performance reaches extremely high levels:
- Particle filtration efficiency of up to 99.5%
- Bacterial filtration efficiency (BFE) of up to 99.9999%
- Viral filtration efficiency (VFE) of up to 99.9939%
Optimization of the internal geometry using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations has also helped reduce airflow resistance while maintaining consistent performance even at high respiratory flow rates. AERO provides a resistance below 1,202 Pa at 720 L/min (12 L/sec), supporting high-flow spirometry testing without compromising patient comfort.
AERO has been developed to offer maximum flexibility of use, allowing the same model to be used across different types of respiratory tests. From standard pulmonary function testing to High Flow tests, the device delivers reliable performance while helping simplify day-to-day operations.
Comparative testing against other filters available on the market has demonstrated AERO’s strong performance in terms of both filtration efficiency and airflow resistance. At 30 L/min, AERO achieved a filtration efficiency of 99.5%, compared with 98% for the best-performing competitor product included in the test.
In high-flow resistance testing conducted at 840 L/min, AERO recorded a pressure drop of 1,408 Pa, approximately 7% lower than the best result measured among the competitor filters tested. The other products analyzed showed higher resistance values, reaching more than 2.5 times the value recorded by AERO.
These results highlight AERO’s ability to combine high filtration efficiency with low airflow resistance, even under high respiratory flow conditions, supporting both patient comfort and measurement reliability.
Ergonomic Design and Patient Comfort
AERO features an ergonomic, high-grip mouthpiece designed to provide comfort, stability and ease of use throughout the test. The shape of the device has been developed to promote a secure grip and a more comfortable experience for both patients and healthcare professionals.
Weighing just 32 grams, AERO also helps reduce the perceived burden on the patient during testing, while maintaining high standards of robustness and reliability.
Beyond performance, AERO reflects GVS’s commitment to developing solutions with increasing consideration for environmental impact. The device has been designed to optimize material use, helping to reduce plastic consumption. This approach is part of the Group’s broader sustainability journey, with the aim of combining environmental responsibility, quality and safety while fully respecting the stringent requirements of medical applications.
A New Benchmark for Spirometry
By combining high filtration efficiency, low airflow resistance even at high flow rates, reduced weight, ergonomic design and proven comparative performance, AERO represents a new generation of spirometry filters designed to support more reliable, safe and comfortable testing for patients and healthcare professionals.
